At the Institute of Urban Farming Innovation (IUHFI), we are passionate about nurturing the next generation of urban agriculture leaders. Our Development Programs and Competitions are designed to inspire creativity, innovation, and practical skills among students. Through these initiatives, high school students can gain hands-on experience, showcase their ideas, and contribute to the future of sustainable urban farming.
Teen Urban Farming Innovator of the Year Award
The Teen Urban Farming Innovator of the Year Award is an annual competition exclusively for U.S. high school students who are passionate about urban agriculture and sustainability. This competition challenges students to develop innovative urban farming projects that address real-world issues such as food security, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.
Project Submission Guidelines
Each year, a unique urban farming concept or theme will be announced to encourage students to develop practical and creative solutions. This concept will address a current challenge or emerging trend in urban agriculture, such as:
- Sustainable Water Use in Urban Farming
- Vertical Farming for Limited Spaces
- Climate-Resilient Crops for Cities
- Waste-to-Farm Systems for Urban Environments
- Smart Technologies for Urban Agriculture
Key Submission Requirements:
- Innovative Solutions: Develop a project proposal or prototype that presents a creative and feasible solution to the selected theme. Your solution should be practical, scalable, and applicable to real urban environments.
- Detailed Proposal Document: Submit a proposal (3-5 pages) outlining:
- The problem statement related to the year’s concept.
- Your proposed solution with detailed explanations.
- The methodology you used in developing your project.
- Potential impact on urban communities (e.g., sustainability, food security, community engagement).
- A clear implementation plan and estimated costs/resources required.
- Prototype or Visuals:
- Include visual elements like diagrams, models, prototypes, or videos that illustrate your concept.
- Demonstrate how your solution works and its potential real-world application.
- Presentation Video:
- Record a 3-5 minute video explaining your project and the innovative aspects of your solution.
- Highlight the key features, benefits, and potential impact of your work.
- Research and Data:
- Support your proposal with research findings, data analysis, and case studies where applicable.
Selection and Development Process
- Concept Announcement:
- Each year, IUHFI will announce a new urban farming challenge or concept for students to address.
- Initial Submissions:
- Students submit their initial proposals by the submission deadline.
- Top Concept Selection:
- A panel of experts will select the Top 10 Concepts based on creativity, feasibility, sustainability, and potential impact.
- Development Phase:
- The selected students will receive mentorship, resources, and guidance to further develop their projects over a 2-month period.
- Final Presentation:
- Students present their fully-developed solutions at the IUHFI Annual Conference, where winners will be announced.

- Prize: $2,500 scholarship and a certificate of achievement.
